Marketing Or Misrepresentation?
Yahoo's home-page chooses to list Olympic nation in terms of total medals won where everywhere else has given priority to gold medals. So, to this point, China lies ahead of the USA. Except in Yahooland.
If your argument isn't totally convincing, should you still make it? Or should you assume that you will be found out?

It's an American thing, rather than a Yahoo! thing, isn't it? ESPN and Sports Illustrated show the medal table in the same way.
Not surprising really. From the sounds of it, the NBC coverage is more "Here is what the Americans did well in today" rather than "Here is a competition in the Olympics". Which may be why Michael Johnson is on the BBC.
God, I'm loving how desperate the race to be #1 come closing ceremony time is. So many political and psychological games being played!
To add my bit, if we go on per capita, then the Aussies are doing alright!! Yessssssssssssssss!
Since American sports culture has an "all or nothing" mentality, the only medals that should count are the Gold (besides, going by the total medal count is kinda like giving a bronze medal the same value as a gold).
