A New Definition Of Marketing.
As adopted in October 2007 by the American Marketing Asosciation.
Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.
I hope you find that communication to be as clear and useful as I did.

I think it's kind of useless. I use Kotler's definition for my students.
"Authentic marketing is not the art of selling what you make but knowing what to make. It is the art of identifying and understanding customer needs and creating solutions that deliver satisfaction to the customers, profits to the producers and benefits for the stakeholders."

Lisa, it's worse than useless. My definition from Geek Marketing 101 is:
Marketing is not a department.
Marketing is a combination of elements that creates the environment in which it is possible to meet a customer need (starting right back at product development). Promotion and sales are just sub-sets of marketing.
Marketing is that pair of Speedos that you realise NOW you should never have allowed yourself to be photographed then with with your friend, with them - on in Copacabana.
